Whose report do you believe? Most people, naturally, believe the majority, if the character of those giving the report is considered equal. So it was when the spies came back with their reports of the land of Canaan. All the reports came from heads of the tribes… respected leaders. So unless the people knew and believed the promises of God to their forefathers, which were also just “reports” passed down through the generations, the natural tendency would be to believe the majority. An overwhelming 10-2 majority, at that. But what if the ratio had been reversed? (10-2 positive.)
Now…. What is the ratio of the reports you are listening to? If it’s 10-2 negative, you’re going to have a tough time believing. What if you turn it around to 10 of God’s Word to 2 of the world’s doubt? I’d like to say 10-zero, but realistically, you can’t avoid hearing the world’s report. But you can overwhelm the doubt and doom with God’s Word, so that the evil report is not credible, doesn’t make sense, and it doesn’t even register.
Think about what we heard Sunday night. It’s certainly worth turning some things off, and turning on the Word of God, the good news, the ultimate good report. Read. Listen. And remember too, the great things God has already done for you. The children of Israel got so focused on the evil reports, that it wiped out their memories of the great miracles God had already done for them.
