Plain. Simple. Heart to Heart.

Two Eyes / Two Witnesses

Two eyes / two witnesses. When I think of our two eyes seeing the same facts from 2 slightly different perspectives, I think of it kind of like two witnesses. I’m always more sure of what I’m seeing, if I have both eyes open, because then I see depth. We perceive depth (3D), either because we’re moving, and objects change relative positions, depending on distance: or because we are seeing 2 perspectives of the same objects. Having 2 different “witnesses” of the same facts, increases the surety of the testimony, and even more so when the witnesses describe the same facts in different words, from different perspectives. I think of the 4 gospels as 4 witnesses. Each different and unique, but all 4 in agreement.God’s Word says, “In the mouth of two or three witnesses shall every word be established.” [Deuteronomy 19:15, Matthew 18:16 and 2 Corinthians 13:1 KJV] (Notice that even that phrase is repeated at least 3 times.) Once I began thinking about that as I read the Word, I started noticing all the times where the writer would repeat the same thought, but change the words, like 2 witnesses, from 2 perspectives. I really believe it’s a way that God has ordained to establish those truths as “unquestionable”, and for us to see the depth and dimension of His Word. You’ll see lots and lots of examples in the Old Testament, but the New Testament writers followed the same patterns.

One good example is the scripture brought out in recent Bible studies. [James 4:2] “Ye lust, and have not: ye kill, and desire to have, and cannot obtain: ye fight and war, yet ye have not, because ye ask not.” First he says “Lust – have not – kill”. Then he repeats the same thought, but changes the words to “desire to have – cannot obtain – fight and war.” If you combine the inputs (2 eyes / 2 witnesses) you get, “You lust / desire to have, and you have not / cannot obtain, so you kill / fight & war”. Firmly established… in “3D”.

Oh, how I love God’s Word! The deeper you dig, the more you realize how AMAZING, and ALIVE, His Word really is. And it’s humbling, because you’re always seeing something you’ve missed, that was right in front of your own two eyes all along.
