The old tall-masted sailing ships have always fascinated me. Those big white sails stacked so high that I’ve marveled that they don’t just keel over in a strong wind, especially when they’re sailing INTO the wind. Sailing on one someday is one of my wild dreams.Anyway, I got up this morning, and those tall ships came to mind. Then the Lord started speaking to me some really encouraging things …about what kept those old ships upright. It’s the BALLAST. It’s the stones, bricks, coal, whatever… something heavy… way down in the very bottom of the ship. It’s something that won’t shift when the ship gets buffeted with the wind and the waves. (If the ballast shifted, the ship could capsize even from a moderate, contrary gust of wind.) It’s something way down below the surface that stabilizes the ship from what’s going on above the surface. It’s what allows the ship to use the wind for sailing, that could otherwise capsize it, and destroy it. It’s what makes the difference between needing the wind blowing favorably to get where you want to go, or instead being able to tack into the wind… to get to your chosen destination, even if the wind is against you. That ballast in our lives is a lot of things: a rock-solid faith in God; His holy Word in the deepest part of our very soul; the unchangeable Word of God… not something that can shift like the words and favor of man; it’s KNOWING God!
Even if people around you can’t see it, they’ll know it’s there, when they see the storms come and go, and you keep sailing on.
