Should the purpose of our worship be to “feel the Lord”, or that the Lord can “feel us”?
Is our worship “Lord, I want…”, or “Lord, You are…”?
That was just a little thing the Lord spoke to me, and here’s why it gets me excited.
I just LOVE to feel the Lord. It charges my soul. It makes my love for Him burn hotter. To know that He also loves to “feel me”… to feel my love for Him, to feel my adoration and praise, to feel my thankfulness and faith in Him, to feel my humble awe of Him… that is beyond exciting!
A loving relationship is, and always has been, a 2-way thing. If only one side treasures the companionship, the closeness, the time together… what kind of relationship is that?
I thank God, that my love relationship with Him is more than “God so loved (past tense) the world (big group of people)”. Yes, that is wonderful! But He LOVES me! …Now! And of course God still loves the world (present tense), but He loves ME! We love each other! I don’t think I can put into words how it thrills me to know that God loves to feel my presence, as much as I love to feel His.
But worship is a little different, in a sense. It’s more one-way. God and I are not equal. He is my Father. I am His son. He is the potter. I am the clay. He gave me life. I am totally dependent on Him. He is infinitely greater than I am. So I worship Him. Humbly. All one-way. Forever.
Now there are a lot of very good things that I want from the Lord. It’s a good kind of “want”. A want that is hunger. A hunger that drives a person to ask, seek, and knock. God is pleased with that kind of want, and He promises to reward it. He even sees our acknowledgement of our need for Him as a kind of worship.
But when I am concentrating on things I want, even good things of God, I am aware of a lack. Where there is a want, there is awareness of lack. If we are really going to soar in worship, we need to get our eyes off any lack, and focus on worshipping the great I AM, in whom is NO lack. He is ALL-mighty! With Him, there is NO limit! When your eyes are totally focused on all the He IS, it is impossible NOT to worship Him!
It’s not about us. It’s about Him! As soon as we start saying to the Lord, the great I AM, “You ARE… this to me, …and You ARE that to me… “, the worship just flows. Any time. Anywhere.
