If you want to do a little self-check on where your treasure is, stop and think for a moment… what is the LAST thing you want the Lord to ask you to do? When (or IF) you tell the Lord you’ll do anything He asks, what are you most afraid He might say?
Are you afraid to even promise Him that you’ll do whatever He asks, because of that one thing you don’t want to give up? THAT, my friend, is your real treasure, and THAT is where your heart is!
“For where your treasure is, there will your heart be also.” [Mathew 6:21 & Luke 12:34]
In Matthew 19:16-26 and Luke 18:18-26, it tells of a man who came to Jesus asking, “Good Master, what shall I do to inherit eternal life?” After checking off a list of commandments that the guy said he had kept from his youth up, Jesus zeroed in on the ‘one thing he lacked’… his heart was attached to his riches. Jesus told him the good news that he could trade his temporary earthly riches for eternal treasure in heaven. This could have been the most awesome day of his life, but instead, he went away sorrowful, because his treasure ‘owned’ him.
It’s easy to limit your definition of treasure, to something like money or possessions, but more often it’s related to pride. Pride can keep you from admitting you’re wrong, or saying you’re sorry. Pride can keep you from giving up power, and serving another. Pride can keep you from stepping out of the spotlight; or forfeiting praise and honor, even when you deserve it.
But, oh what a freedom when you can come before the Lord… withholding NOTHING! And oh, how exciting for God… to have a servant… a vessel… an instrument that He can use in absolutely ANY way HE wants to! THOSE are the ones that He will welcome into His kingdom!
“Sell all” is not a burdensome commandment! It’s an INVITATION to unspeakable RICHES!!!
