The Wife of Your Covenant
The desire of God’s heart is that we may be one with the Father and the Son, and with each other. (See John 17) That doesn’t mean that you get absorbed into another, so that you are no longer a living, breathing individual. You don’t disappear from the earth. Your wife does not become a widow when you become one with Jesus Christ.
When you become one with Christ, your marriage starts to become a reflection and a model of your relationship with Jesus. No matter what the circumstances of how you two came to be married, God has made the two of you… ONE! (See Ephesians 5:30-32; Genesis 2:24; Malachi 2:15)
Ephesians 5:30 says, “We ARE members of His body, of His flesh, and of His bones.” We ARE, now. Not will be someday. To make the connection perfectly clear, he goes on to say in verses 31 & 32, “For this cause shall a man leave his father and mother, and shall be joined unto his wife, and they two shall be one flesh. This is a great mystery, but I speak concerning Christ and the church.”
Do you think the church always agrees with Christ? Does Christ ‘put her away’ when she doesn’t agree with Him? Does He divorce her when she does something He’s told her over and over not to do?
She can leave Him whenever she wants, but He will never leave her or forsake her. He has entered into a covenant with her. A covenant… not an arrangement, not an agreement, not even a contract. A covenant of blood! His very life is in His blood. His very LIFE is bound up in His marriage covenant with His bride!
That’s why it is so powerful, when in Malachi 2:14, God calls your wife, “the wife of your covenant”! Your LIFE is in your wife! You ‘put away’ your wife… you are putting away your LIFE! THAT is how God sees it!
So what does Christ do for a wife that isn’t all that He wants her to be? He GIVES Himself!
(25) Husbands, love your wives, even as Christ also loved the church, and GAVE HIMSELF for it; (26) That he might sanctify and cleanse it with the washing of water by the word, (27) That he might present it to himself a glorious church, not having spot, or wrinkle, or any such thing; but that it should be holy and without blemish. (28) So ought men to love their wives as their own bodies. He that loveth his wife loveth himself.
When God tells us to do something, it is to be like Him! HE loves US as His OWN BODY!!!! Wow! What security! What comfort!
If your wife can feel that same love, and security, and comfort, from you… how could she not respond with the same love and commitment and appreciation and submission, as we feel toward our Jesus?! AMEN!
