Sermon on the Mount – Perfect As Your Father

You can read the Sermon on the Mount (Matthew: Chapters 5, 6, & 7) out loud in about 10 minutes, but surely there has never been a sermon preached so powerful, so beyond the wisdom of man. This IS the heart of God, direct from the lips of the Son of God. You can’t get any better authority than that.

Think of what’s packed in there. Even just in Chapter 5, it goes all the way from “Blessed are the poor in spirit”, to “Be ye therefore perfect, even as your Father which is in heaven is perfect.” I see that last line as the summary, the crown, of everything that came before. That’s what the “therefore” is there for. It’s the unbreakable link. You can’t disconnect “Be ye perfect” from the context of everything Jesus had just spoken.

Consider too, that Jesus said, “…even as your Father which is in heaven is perfect.” What He had been teaching was not just commandments for our lives, but also a picture, a revelation of the Father. He’s teaching us HOW to be LIKE OUR FATHER.
