I believe that those words, coming from a sincere heart, move God about as much as anything a man could say. When a person cries out, “Open my eyes”, they are humbly admitting that they can’t see… that their eyes are not already open. That’s the perfect starting point for God to move.
Jesus said, “For judgment I am come into this world, that they which see not might see; and that they which see might be made blind.” [John 9:39 KJV] In that light, I’m going to come to the Lord, saying, “I don’t see. Please, open my eyes.”
Of course I see some things. God has opened my eyes… but still in a limited way. The more He opens my eyes, the more I can see that there is SO much more that I DON’T see. And I know that it’s not just trivial knowledge that I can be content without. It’s the deep intimate things of God’s very heart, and His great wisdom, and love. So I still cry out like a blind man, “God, Open my eyes!”
It’s when a person thinks that he sees everything clearly, that he’s in the most danger. Some of the Pharisees there in John 9 got offended, and asked Him, “Are we blind also?” His response to them was, “If ye were blind, ye should have no sin: but now ye say, We see; therefore your sin remaineth.” (vs 40)
Jesus never turned away a blind man that came to Him asking for sight. As a matter of fact, when He laid His hands on one blind man, and the man saw men as trees walking: Jesus laid His hands on him again, so that he could see every man clearly. (See Mark 8:22-25)
It is absolutely God’s desire that we see clearly. So let’s keep asking, seeking, knocking… whatever it takes… in true humbleness of heart. God hears, and He answers!
