Dealing With Your Past (Part 4): What Does God Remember?

God’s memory is perfect. He does not have an amnesia problem. He knows everything, and has never ‘forgotten’ anything. Yet listen to these scriptures:

“…for I will forgive their iniquity, and I will remember their sin no more.” [Jeremiah 31:34 KJV]

“For I will be merciful to their unrighteousness, and their sins and their iniquities will I remember no more.” [Hebrews 8:12 KJV]

“…He will subdue our iniquities; and Thou wilt cast all their sins into the depths of the sea.” [Micah 7:19 KJV] (This is where the term ‘sea of forgetfulness’ comes from.)

Someone with total amnesia of some event would insist that it never happened… and be totally confused when everyone around them says that it did happen. God does not have that problem when Satan accuses you of something in your past that God has forgiven. God has not forgotten the facts about your past. But the TRUTH, in His eyes, is that when the blood of Jesus Christ washes you, your sins are removed “as far as the east is from the west”. [Psalm 103:12] They don’t count. He does not consider them. It’s like inadmissible evidence in His court. He will never bring them up, and if someone else brings them up, God will declare His righteousness… for you!

“Being justified freely by his grace through the redemption that is in Christ Jesus: (25)Whom God hath set forth to be a propitiation through faith in his blood, to declare his righteousness for the remission of sins that are past, through the forbearance of God; (26)To declare, I say, at this time his righteousness: that he might be just, and the justifier of him which believeth in Jesus.” [Romans 3:24-26 KJV]

Yes, your past sins are a fact. A fact can be true, but still not be ‘the truth’. But what God declares is THE TRUTH!

When the Bible says that God will ‘remember no more’, it means that He will never bring your past sins up for consideration… not that He believes falsely that you never sinned. 1 John 1:9-10 says, “If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just to forgive us our sins, and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness. If we say that we have not sinned, we make him a liar, and his word is not in us.” Yes, God sees the history, the facts, of your past. But when we confess our sins, He forgives, and He sees the ‘truth’ of the blood, and sees you in HIS righteousness… AS IF you never sinned. Now we just need to ‘see’ what God sees, and believe what He declares.

There’s no use trying to deny past mistakes, failures, and sins. Trying to deny or forget will not produce righteousness, but rather frustration. Neither should you accept condemnation over the facts of your past; or because you can’t seem to forget. 2 Peter 1:9 even says that we should NOT forget that we were purged from our old sins. But remember the blood that washed it all away! Remember that God is your justifier! Remember that “He hath made Him to be sin for us, who knew no sin; that we might be made the righteousness of God in Him.” [2 Corinthians 5:21]

As a blood-washed child of God, when you truly see yourself as God sees you now, your past will lose its power over you. You can be so free, that your past can be a testimony to others, of the saving power of Jesus Christ! As you grow in wisdom and the knowledge of God, God may still bring to your attention things from your past, even sins, that you hadn’t recognized before, or maybe haven’t dealt with; not to condemn you, but that you can be even freer… through confession, repentance, and deliverance… becoming more and more like your heavenly Father.

The Truth will make you FREE! Free from the guilt and condemnation of your past… yes, but more than that… free from SIN! Free INDEED!
“Being then made free from sin, ye became the servants of righteousness.” [Romans 6:18]
“But now being made free from sin, and become servants to God, ye have your fruit unto holiness, and the end everlasting life.” [Romans 6:22]
